One last tip: use hidden rests (usually in a different voice, with the exception of grace note rests). It’s very good for things like aligning dynamics, text, and things like symbols and line objects. These are very good for aligning things usually, although occasionally it’ll align things in strange ways. Two more useful commands: make into row, and make into column. These are really good for seeing how much you’re dragging things around, and how much space you have where. I usually have system rulers on, and object rulers to selected objects – otherwise it can get a bit cramped. Object rulers are very good to see what you’re doing if you’re dragging staves around to even things out. They’re also very useful for formatting orchestral parts and making sure page turns are ok.

Sibelius tends to squeeze more bars into a single line than I’d prefer, so I tend to use these to space things out and make my pages look nice. Lock formatting locks the selected passage, unlock will unlock formatting and revert to the Sibelius default. Some other useful commands include make into line (which will make the selected bars into a single line), make into page, lock formatting, and unlock formatting. For things like system text, you can check which staves you want the text to appear on. If I’ve moved the margins around, I tend to adjust how many mm I want the page numbers from the top of the page (and I usually do this by adjusting it how many mm they are from the bottom of the page, because otherwise it doesn’t let me move it far up enough). There’s options for editing things like page number formatting, bar number formatting, title, composer, system text, etc. It’s worth poking around the engraving rules dialog and seeing what sorts of things you can find there, like when the program automatically justifies staves, or whether or not to use stemlets over beamed rests.Įdit text styles has a bunch of useful features too. This, combined with the staff size change, already helps a lot. Sibelius tends to make the margins quite large and usually I make them smaller, to make the score less cluttered.

You can pick the staff size in the Engraving Rules menu, and I often go and scale it down noticeably.Īnother useful thing that comes to mind in Engraving Rules is page margins. Sibelius tends to pick quite a large staff size by default (especially in orchestral settings). My usual choice is Helsinki, as I like how clean it looks. To start with, you can change the music font by going to Edit All Fonts. I recommend playing around with the formatting options.
